Survey of what does and does not exist on the Internet
Anyone can buy a website URL, and most URLs are fairly inexpensive. This project is a survey of what URLs have been purchased and linked to live websites.
No Replica looked at three datasets: most common surnames; most used English words; and, most popular websites with the “.com” added to the url (e.g., “amazoncom.com”). For each dataset, we pulled 1000 URLs and programmatically “pinged” them, checking if they exist.
Each ping results in one of three scenarios: 1) the site exists; 2) the site doesn’t; or, 3) the site never loads (i.e. times out). We then presented these results in a masonry layout with randomly generated color palettes.
