Common Dimensions

Research platform collecting, documenting, and discussing chairs

  • Web

Common Dimensions is a research platform and print publication that approaches the subject of the chair by asking deceptively obtuse questions, like “What makes a chair a chair?” No Replica collaborated with founder Rebecca Wilkinson to develop the project’s website, which features several unique user experiences. These include a catalog of chair-related subjects, a series of interviews with furniture designers, and a curated archive of readings.

The site’s homepage features an interactive model of Bill Carroll’s “Dust Chair,” which is layered on top of provocative questions.

The “Library” page features a large collection of chair-related objects and concepts.

The “Interviews” pages feature several interviews with chair designers. These interviews utilize a split window that lets users scroll either via the image column or text column.

The “Reader” page features a curated selection of readings. Users open readings by first selecting topics, which reveals related quotes that can be expanded to show full articles.
