Developing fonts that push the limits of type design

Overview

Too Much Type is No Replica’s in-house type foundry. We design and develop open-source experimental typefaces that explore new ideas for digital typography. These experiments push the limits of fonts by prototyping novel use cases, such as interactive and kinetic typography.

The foundry’s website is inspired by vintage operating systems. On the homescreen, fonts are depicted as “desktop icons” that the user can drag to arrange, or click to view more information. A Clippy-inspired mascot provides more information about the foundry’s projects and the site’s features. Individual font experiments are presented inside simulated browser windows.

Overview

We use Too Much Type as our testing ground for ideas that eventually make their way into studio projects. This includes fonts that resemble stop-motion handwriting, like the one featured on our identity for Young Krones, or dynamically shifting pixel fonts, like the one featured on RISD Grad Show 2024. Our flagship typeface is Limkin, a variable sans/serif hybrid typeface that you’ll find in use on this website and across several of our projects.

Too Much Type’s website resembles a computer interface. Each time the page loads, random letters are selected from our various fonts and displayed like icons on the desktop. The layout and colors change with every visit. To make the user experience more accessible, we have a mascot (“Typey”) that greets the user and guides them through the site’s functionality.
Fonts are stored in a pop-up menu. Users can download and test fonts, or add additional letters to the desktop. Once letters are added, clicking one brings up customization settings. These include options for each font’s variable axis settings, such as weight, that allow for granular control over a font’s appearance.
Clicking the logo at the top of the screen reveals shortcuts for quickly adding random letters to the desktop. The “Controls” menu offers options for rearranging these letters on the desktop.
Typographic projects are presented via simulated browser windows. Within these windows, users can either test out specific fonts or see unique use cases for our more experimental fonts.
Users can resize, minimize, or rearrange the simulated browser windows.
